Excerpt from Book One: Discovery by R J Poole
Once a young man journeyed into the desert to locate wisdom.
After many days of fruitless searching he came upon an old well. The well once served travellers on horseback in times of old and still contained a cool supply of water.
Exhausted, the young man slept the night by the well to refresh himself from his journey. As the stars climbed the night sky and the heat of the desert receded, he saw a vision splendid of the Mother Goddess who spoke to him asking –
“What part of peace found you wanting?
Was it the solace of love?
Was it the laughter of the young?
What darkness turned your hand to war and made a sport of killing?
Which side of peace liked you not?
Was it the absence of the sword?
Was it the ancient fear of the wild rising in your blood?
What madness turned your hand from hunting food to the hunting of your neighbour?
What gift might satisfy you and stay your hand from this poison?”
Then the Mother Goddess ascended the vacant air above the well saying: “Hear me now that you may know what you have searched for these past days. Hear my words that wisdom may flow through you and outwards into the wider world.”
“Man is woman also. Look you to your heart and know that part which contains your breath (anima). Know that which helps you to breathe and move forward and you will know also peace and harmony in this life.”
In the morning the young man awoke and to his surprise he saw only the empty desert. The old well was nowhere to be seen and though he searched he found nothing save the barren landscape.
“What wisdom is this that plays havoc with a man’s eyes” – asked he?
Yet in truth the young man’s eyes were opened for he had listened to the wellspring of life and rejoiced in her words. He had looked where once there had appeared nothing and found himself reflected. He had found peace in the knowledge of his heart.
He had learned to embrace all of himself, man and woman and from that time onwards the desert seemed no longer barren.
